[...] Research your customer base using social media; and your product, your competitors and then figure out how you fit into the sales mix. What do you do better and what makes you the “go to” place? Build around your strengths. If you’re not the go to place, find out why and fix it. Using social media as a research mechanism before you jump in is going to give you a greater understanding of the potential of each forum/site you enter, what your customers are talking about, and if that particular site/forum is worth the time investment it will take to curate it into a sales/lead funnel.
Good article. Coupons are just a tease to bring people into experience the business. I agree that it is then that the business has the opportunity to seize the day and demonstrate their expertise, service and value to keep the customer, client coming back. Value over momentary satisfaction of a quick deal is where Small Businesses can prove their worth. Small Businesses bring in 39% of the GNP. Let's keep them growing. Shop Local every time and support your community while receiving great value and service.

Good post. I think most businesses that set up a business FB page should really think about hiring somewhere to grow their page who specializes in this. I am guilty of ignoring my business page, and need to make a habit of posting new content, and getting more followers than just the people that are on my personal page.

The facebook business page boom from cupcake companies to home builders comes from the fact that an online presence is as important as a yellow page ad was in the 70's, and the great thing about facebook is, it's free. I agree it is not the main focus of any advertising strategy, but to get free online presence on the most popular website nowadays is always a bonus.

I have heard local stories of businesses using facebook in a great way to drive traffic in their doors. If you get one customer from posting a special on your wall, you must be happy with your return on investment when your fan page was free.

Right on man. Absolutely, social media is just another tool. Interesting comment about businesses who are eager to move on, to get to the next job and all. What business owners fail to realize, is that word of mouth, which has become relevant today more than ever, has shifted to going online.

So they either need to be "part of the conversation" and give their screaming fans a way for them to be easily found, or their competition will.

Yes, ultimately, its about making money, but not entirely. Its not the only thing, but surely is one the top main things. Businesses can't exist without cash coming in.

So it all comes down to, if you're going to do social media, target with a purpose, and if you provide great service and all. You won't have a problem growing your business fast and cheap.

Thanks for the great post.
